Cheap home cleaning tips

We all want our home to be clean, however it is costly maintaining a spotless home using conventional cleaning products.

So we have followed up on our article about making ‘your whites whiter’ and will do the job on the cheap:

Cleaning your barbecue grill with onions

BBQs can be notoriously difficult to clean, so try using onions. Yes onions! Cut an onion in half and use it to clean the grate.

Keep your mattress clean and fresh with Vodka

Mix your choice of aromatic essential oil with some Vodka in an old spray container and spray the content lightly all over your mattress and then leave it to air-dry. The alcohol in the Vodka fights the odor causing bacteria while the essential oils add fragrance to the mattress.

Shoe polish on leather sofas and furniture

Shoe polish can be very good in renewing aging leather sofas. Just apply and buff the leather as you would with your shoes.

Sanitising your sponge

Health experts point to the kitchen sponge as one of the dirtiest cleaning materials in a home. So your sponge wet and microwave it for two minutes, which will kill up to 99 per cent of germs.

Sanitising your chopping board

It is common knowledge tht chopping boards can contain very nasty bacteria if not cleaned properly. Therefore clean your chopping board with lemon and salt.

This is very effective because lemon has a germ fighting pH3 level, which is the same acidity of vinegar and the salt has abrasive qualities like a scourer.

Effective oven cleaner

The simple but versatile baking soda has powerful cleaning properties.

Mix about half-cup of baking soda with a few tablespoons of water to make a paste-like consistency; then spread the paste evenly in the oven and leave overnight.

Pour some vinegar into a spray container and spray over the backing soda, then wipe with a cloth.

Clean your dishwasher

Place a cup of vinegar on the top shelf and run the dishwasher on the highest temperature cycle, then sprinkle some baking soda on the bottom and re-run the cycle.

Recycling your old socks

Refills for floor cleaners and sweepers over time will cost a fortune. So how about using old socks to do the job! Socks with

microfibre material can be great in attracting dirt on surfaces.

Coffee bean air freshner

Coffee beans are an effective natural airfreshener and deodoriser –  put the beans in a small open container like a cup and place it on kitchen tops, fridge, and in the bathroom.
