A study of more than 300,000 people by researchers from Pennsylvania State University found a link between iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) and hearing loss.

Iron deficiency anaemia is a condition where a lack of iron in the body leads to a reduction in the number of red blood cells, which can cause damage to the cochlea or nerve pathways.

There is a link between IDA in adults and hearing loss, which affects mostly women and around 30 per cent of the world’s population.

Consequently, Guinness which contains high levels of iron like leafy green vegetables, brown rice and some meat could also help prevent the onset of this type of deafness.

However, nutritionists caution that a pint of Guinness contains less than three per cent of the iron needed daily.

But also be careful about turning to iron supplements as an alternative because iron tablets could damage the body because they may contain 10 times more than is necessary for health.

Guinness however, contains antioxidant compounds similar to those found in certain fruits and vegetables, which help to slow down the deposit of harmful cholesterol on the artery walls.

Furthermore, other studies have suggested that Guinness could also help to prevent heart clots that raise the risk of heart attacks just in the same way as a low dose aspirin would.
