Why are breast sizes getting bigger?

The average breast-size of UK women has grown significantly in the last 50 years according to researchers with lingerie company Bluebella.

The average woman’s breasts have gone from 34B in the 1960s to the eye-catching 36DD today – the researchers collated this information using government statistics.

They found that in 1967, the average woman was a 34B – about the same size of Jane Fonda back then. However 50 years on and the average UK woman now measures two inches more on the back and has gone up three cup sizes to a 34DD – same size as Halle Berry.

This remarkable progression of average breast size can be tracked over the past five decades:

With improvements in health by the late 1970s the average breast-size had gone from 34B to 34C – the bust size of someone like Barbara Streisand at the height of her fame back in the 1970s.

With the 1980s came the growth in cosmetic surgery and breast enhancement surgery which, pardon the pun, helped push up the average bust to 34D. Actress Daryl Hannah was a similar size when she made the hit film Splash.

The 1990s saw an explosion in breast enhancement with celebrities like Pamela Anderson from the TV series Baywatch opting for larger mammaries and consequently promoting a trend that impacted on the average breast size – pushing it up to 34DD.

In the 2000s, better diet and the appearance of curvier women contributed to the average breast size increasing to 36D – just like Scarlett Johansson.

And in the last decade, there has been greater acceptance of plus-size and curvy figures, as well as the continuing demand for breast enhancement – and we are now at 36DD.

Where will this take us in the next 20 to 50 years? Well things are moving pretty fast especially in the adult entertainment industry. It is not uncommon to see adult models with natural breast sizes in the region of 36HH and even bigger.

Interestingly, the evolution of average breast sizes is not confined to women. About 60 percent of males – and that number is growing – are affected by gynecomastia.

Gynecomastia is the benign enlargement of male breast tissue – something common in adolescents as well as in middle-aged and older men.

Some experts on men’s health have pointed to, exposure to high levels of estrogen in the womb, the impact of sythetic products as well as diet choices.

However it could be that the changing average breast-size in women, and the growing incidence of man boobs are just down to our natural evolutionary process as human beings.
